how to make a tissue paper tassel garland + let’s party!

April 18, 2012

I find that I have to balance my baking with a low to moderate level of crafting. For every sheet pan of brownies that comes out of the oven, there is some little project coming out of the craft box I keep in the closet.

Greeting cards! Beads! You name it! If it can fit in the box then I’ve made it!

This is my latest.

Made on the super cheap, all you need to make this tissue paper tassel garland is tissue paper, a string of sorts, and scissors.

Gather your supplies. Each tassel requires one sheet of tissue paper, so use whatever you have around. I had gold, navy and mint green.

Working one sheet at a time fold the single sheet of tissue in half width-wise (hamburger-style anyone?) and cut fringe about 1/4-inch wide from the open ends towards the fold. I found the last crease before the fold in the tissue was a good place to stop, but you want to leave about 3-inches of the middle uncut.

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Unfold the fringed sheets and lay them flat. Now we are going to roll them up like burritos.

Working with the uncut center section, carefully roll up the paper. Stop every so often to untangle the fringe as needed. Keep rolling. When you have finished rolling, twist the center until it is tight (don’t go crazy and rip it in half but it should be twisted quite tightly). Make a loop (because you did such a good job of twisting!) and it will begin to curl in on itself and make a twist. One tassel done.

Thread them on your fancy string and hang it up in your house. Now that you have a tissue paper tassel garland, you are all set to party.

So…let’s party!

Throw together a few tiny flower arrangements with $3.99 flowers from TJ’s. Just stuff them in old salt shakers. Cute. Cheap. Check!

Find your ice bucket. Set up a bar. Be sure to have lots of brown sugar cocktail syrup on hand for cocktails. Or how about mix up a twist on the classic? A pickled cherry old-fashioned anyone?

My absolute favorite cocktail is of the rosemary-infused lemonade bourbon variety. Summertime. Or springtime. Mostly just cocktailtime.

Need an easy party snack? Gougères are the answer! Make one dough but mix up two flavors and everyone is happy.

Last thing: be sure to have a little stash of Negroni jello shots in the fridge for later. Everyone needs a super classy cocktail in jello shot form and nothing says I’m having a fancy cocktail party like jello shots!

Those are some classy jello shots, for sure. Ooh, and that rosemary-lemonade bourbon sounds great, too. I recently made a maple-jalapeño bourbon that was really good, especially if you’re into the sweet and savory combo.
